Addressing period poverty at college, one menstruator at a time
Founded by Asande Mchunu, a 24-year-old electrical engineering student in her second year at Umfolozi TVET College in Mandeni.
The Comfort Circle is dedicated to improving access to menstrual products, reducing period stigma, and empowering women and girls to manage their periods with dignity in KwaZulu-Natal.
Assande had this to say in an article for the The North Coast Courier: "There are many youg women like me who come from financially unstable homes. They come to campus with no money for accommodation or food, relying on each other to get by. But when it's that time of the month and you have no money, what do you do?
I was fortunate to have people, like my high school teacher, who helped me. But what about those who have no one to turn to?"
This is why Asande started The Comfort Circle. With only R100, she set about organising pads for her fellow students.
Once she asked for donations, however, things snowballed, with Asande quickly collecting 80 packs of pads! Students can simply go to the student support building on campus to receive pads from the student liason officer.
We are proud to support The Comfort Circle. Please do the same! Donate pads to the cause, volunteer your time and share this page with everybody you know. After all, it's up to each one of us to make sure that no menstruator has to miss or skip class or worse because they're bleeding.
For over 70 years, we have supported women and people with periods. And while that's through our selection of safe and comfortable products, it's also because we choose to champion causes – like: The Comfort Circle – that make a difference in their communities.
The comfort circle needs donations, as well as volunteers.
