How to Use a Reusable Tampon Applicator

If you’re considering switching from disposable plastic applicators to a more sustainable option, look no further than Lil-Lets.

We understand your desire to be more eco-friendly and contribute to the planet. If, like us, you're keen on the idea of a reusable applicator but need assistance with loading and positioning it, you've come to the right place!

What exactly is a tampon applicator?

A tampon applicator is a tool designed to help insert a tampon easily. It typically consists of a smooth plastic or cardboard tube that ensures proper placement without direct contact.

The Lil-Lets reusable applicator is a great alternative to single-use applicators. Made from medical-grade materials, our reusable applicator can be used again and again. It’s free from latex, BPA, and phthalates. It can be used in conjunction with all of our regular, super and super plus tampon absorbencies. And because we know life is busy it even comes with its own certified cotton organic bag for convenience and storage.

So, let’s get started. To learn how to put a tampon in with an applicator, you need to familiarise yourself with all of the features. We recommend sterilising your reusable applicator before using it. You only need to sterilise the applicator - no need to sterilise or boil the lid.

Sterilising your tampon applicator

  1. Wash your hands.
  2. Wash the applicator with warm water and mild soap, and then rinse thoroughly.
  3. Remove the lid and set it to one side.
  4. Immerse the applicator fully in a pan of boiling water and boil it for 5 minutes.
  5. Allow the applicator to cool in the pan and then remove it. Dry it thoroughly before popping the lid back on. Your reusable applicator is now ready for use.

TOP TIP: Don’t let the water boil for too long as this could cause the applicator to become misshapen.

How to insert a tampon with a reusable applicator

  1. Wash Your Hands: You should always handle newly opened period products with clean hands.
  2. Unwrap the Tampon: Hold the rounded end of the tampon, remove the wrapper, and gently pull out the string. Ensure it's knotted and secure with a light tug.
  3. Prepare the Applicator: Open the reusable applicator by pulling out the plunger and opening it at the hinged section.
  4. Insert the Tampon: Place the unwrapped tampon inside the open applicator, making sure the string hangs through the dedicated string opening.
  5. Close the Applicator: Snap the hinged section back into place until it clicks fully closed.
  6. Position Yourself: Find a comfortable position, like squatting or sitting on the toilet. Insert the applicator gently into your vagina, angling it towards your lower back.
  7. Insert the Tampon: Push the plunger all the way in until the tampon is comfortably in place.
  8. Clean and Store the Applicator: After use, clean the applicator and store it in its cotton bag.

TOP TIP: Keep the string secure by pressing it against the lid with your thumb until you're ready to insert it.

Lil-Lets Golden Rules when using a reusable applicator

  • If you’re out and about, and don’t feel comfortable cleaning your applicator in public toilets, take bottled water with you and give the applicator a rinse as needed. Then when you’re home, give it a clean with warm water and mild soap.
  • We know us girls love to share with friends, but please don’t be tempted to share your reusable applicator with anyone else, even if it’s your bestie.
  • Inside every Lil-Lets reusable applicator box, you will find full instructions for taking care of your applicator and if you follow these guidelines your applicator will last for many years.  Check it regularly for any damage, or wear and tear, and don’t worry if a bit of staining may look unsightly - it’s perfectly normal.
  • If your applicator becomes sticky or splits, we do advise throwing it away and replacing it. Wrapping it up and popping in your normal household waste is the best method for disposal.

At the end of your period, you’ll need to sterilise your cup and pop it in your cotton storage bag. Store the bag in a cool and damp-free place until your next period. You see, it's not so difficult after all!

Frequently asked questions

When inserting a tampon, where does the applicator go in?

The tampon applicator should be gently inserted into the vaginal opening, angling it slightly toward your lower back for the most comfortable placement.

How far do you put a tampon applicator in?

Insert the applicator until the base of it touches the entrance of your vagina. Once the applicator is fully inserted, push the plunger to release the tampon.

Can tampon applicators be recycled?

Most tampon applicators made from plastic are not recyclable. The good news is that Lil-Lets offers reusable applicators that can be used over and over again - it’s great for the environment.

Can you flush tampon applicators?

No, you should never flush tampon applicators (or tampons themselves). They can cause blockages in plumbing and harm the environment. Always dispose of them in a bin. Be a binner, not a flusher!

Can you reuse a tampon applicator?

Lil-Lets reusable tampon applicators can be used more than once and can last several years. They just need to be washed and dried after each use.

Can I only use organic tampons with my reusable applicator?

Any non-applicator tampons from the Lil-Lets range will be suitable for use with our reusable applicator. Remember that the applicator will accommodate our Lite, Regular, Super and Super Plus absorbencies!

Why don’t I need to sterilise the lid of my reusable applicator?

Because the lid of your applicator does not come into contact with your vaginal opening there is no need to sterilise. It is also made from a softer material to the main body of the applicator and as such sterilisation of the lid could lead to it becoming misshapen.

I can feel the tampon inside, me what am I doing wrong?

Like anything new, using a reusable applicator can take practice and we’re convinced that after a few attempts you’ll be an expert at getting your tampon into the most comfortable position. If this is still an issue, we suggest pushing the applicator in a little farther so the only part sitting outside the vagina is the plunger section. And remember aiming the applicator in a slanting position towards the lower back is the best technique for insertion.
